Iowa Facts

Based in Wichita, Kan., Koch Industries, Inc. is one of the largest private companies in America. It owns a diverse group of companies involved in refining, chemicals and biofuels; forest and consumer products; fertilizers; polymers and fibers; process and pollution control equipment and technologies; commodity trading and services; minerals; ranching; and investments. Since 2003, Koch companies have invested about $50 billion in acquisitions and other capital expenditures.

With a presence in nearly 60 countries, Koch companies employ about 60,000 people worldwide. In 2012, Koch companies directly employed more than 47,000 people in the United States, and supported more than 200,000 jobs and about $11 billion in compensation and benefits.

Companies in Iowa

Flint Hills Resources, LLC, through its subsidiaries, is a leading refining, chemicals and biofuels company. Its subsidiaries market products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol, biofuels, olefins, polymers and intermediate chemicals, as well as base oils and asphalt. Subsidiaries have an office in Ames and operates ethanol plants in Iowa Falls, Fairbank, Menlo and Shell Rock. The plants have a combined annual capacity of 435 million gallons of ethanol. Another subsidiary operates three asphalt plants in Iowa at Algona, Davenport and Dubuque. The plants provide road construction departments and contractors with liquid asphalt. Another subsidiary distributes refined fuel throughout the state and operates a terminal in Bettendorf.

Koch Pipeline Company, L.P. owns and operates the Wood River Pipeline, a portion of which crosses Iowa. The pipeline originates in Illinois and then moves through northern Missouri, before continuing through central Iowa. The pipeline transports crude oil to refineries in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This pipeline is a part of more than 4,000 miles of pipelines owned or operated by Koch Pipeline Company.

Georgia-Pacific companies have facilities in Dubuque and Monticello that manufacture corrugated containers and a facility in Fort Dodge that produces gypsum panels for residential and commercial construction. Georgia-Pacific LLC and its subsidiaries are among the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of building products, tissue, packaging, paper, cellulose and related chemicals.

Koch Nitrogen Company, LLC owns and operates a fertilizer plant in Fort Dodge and terminals in Fort Madison, Marshalltown, Washington, Garner and Sergeant Bluff. The company and its affiliates have the capability to market and distribute more than 13 million tons of nitrogen products annually.

Safety and Environmental Commitment

Koch companies are committed to operating businesses in a manner that protects the health and safety of employees and the public, as well as the environment by reducing waste and increasing efficiency. Koch companies’ performance is among the best in their industries. Here are some examples:

  • Flint Hills Resources' terminals in Iowa have received the 2012 Safety Excellence Award from the International Liquid Terminals Association. The company's terminals group has also received ILTA's Platinum Safety Award, its highest honor. The two awards recognize member companies that have a strong commitment to continuous safety improvement. The terminals have also earned numerous awards from the National Safety Council and the Iowa Illinois Safety Council.

  • Koch Pipeline Company received the Distinguished Award for Outstanding Safety and Environmental Performance from the American Petroleum Institute in 2011 and 2012. The award is the organization’s highest award. It also received API’s Environmental Performance Award in 2012 and 2013. Employees reached 8 million work hours without a lost-time incident (days away from work and restricted work injuries) in December 2012.

  • Georgia-Pacific’s Monticello plant received STAR certification in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs for its outstanding performance.

  • Koch Nitrogen Company has earned the Stewardship Award for safe shipping from Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company for three consecutive years. It has also earned the Safe Handling Award from the Canadian National Railway Company. The Fort Dodge, Iowa, site has earned the Incident Rate Excellence Award from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council.

Community Commitment

Together with employees, Koch companies provide financial and in-kind support, time and talent to add value in our communities. Here are a few examples:

  • Flint Hills Resources has donated $2,500 to the Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department and $2,500 to the Nashua Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department to purchase equipment for responding to grain bin emergencies. The Fairbank Volunteer Fire Department received a $1,000 donation to help continue its mission of providing efficient and rapid response to emergencies. 

  • A Koch Nitrogen Company challenge grant will fund the purchase of a washer/extractor and dryer to clean the Fort Dodge Fire Department’s protective gear. The $10,600 challenge grant includes $5,000 from Koch Nitrogen Company and $5,600 raised by the City of Fort Dodge. The Salix Fire Department received a grant of $2,500 to help purchase an incident command truck.

  • Through the Georgia-Pacific Foundation, the company partners with many local and statewide organizations to improve the quality of life in communities where GP employees live and work. The GP Foundation focuses support in four key areas: education, enrichment of community, environment and entrepreneurship.

  • Koch Nitrogen Company contributed $2,500 for the Webster County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Brushy Creek Project.
