Environment, Health & Safety Facts

Koch Industries believes that businesses must strive for continuous improvement in their safety and environmental performance to be competitive in today’s global markets.

Koch companies strive for 10,000 percent compliance, with 100 percent of employees fully complying 100 percent of the time. Koch companies have a vision of operational excellence, including principles of operation that demand safe, environmentally responsible decisions and actions. This commitment to a superior standard is visible in how the companies operate facilities and manufacture products.

Commitment to the environment

Koch companies’ Market-Based Management® business philosophy encourages employees to think like owners – an approach that has translated into a firm commitment to environmental stewardship. By employing MBM®, Koch companies create long-term value for society by using resources more efficiently and protecting the environment and the safety and health of our workers and others. Employees strive to continuously improve operations to increase efficiency and reduce energy and water use, emissions and other waste.

Flint Hills Resources success in reducing refinery flare time at its Texas and Minnesota plants earned a Clean Air Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 2009, the company’s overall refinery operations criteria air emissions per barrel were 67 percent lower than the average among peer refiners (based on latest comparison data available). Since 1997, the company has reduced its average per-barrel criteria air emissions by 71 percent.

Koch Industries' tower office building at its headquarters in Wichita, Kan., has the EPA's prestigious ENERGY STAR certification for three consecutive years. It is the the only Wichita office building to earn the honor and one of only five ENERGY STAR-rated buildings in Kansas. ENERGY STAR is the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection.

By participating in reclamation and recycling programs, Koch companies help reduce waste accumulation in landfills. Products such as carpet, gypsum wallboard, paper, plastic and metal are reclaimed and used to make new products. For example, carpet reclaimed through INVISTA’s Antron Reclamation Program™ can be made into filtration devices, automotive parts, packaging materials and many other useful products. Since 2001, the program has reclaimed more than 85 million pounds of carpet, which equates to 425,000 cubic yards of landfill space.

Through a cogeneration process, most of Georgia-Pacific’s North America pulp and paper mills use boiler steam produced during the manufacturing process to turn turbines to generate additional mill electricity – at about double the efficiency of a typical commercial utility. More than half of GP’s energy is self-generated. By making heat and power more efficiently, GP buys less electricity externally, thus saving money and reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.

The Standard: Safety and health excellence

The commitment to build an employee-centered safety culture is seen at Koch company facilities around the world. These efforts have been recognized by numerous industry and government awards.

INVISTA has entered into a “strategic partnership” with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration to share knowledge and further strengthen the health and safety management systems at seven INVISTA company sites in the U.S. Five other Koch companies concluded a similar partnership in 2009, which focused on the benefit and improvement of health and safety management systems, OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs participation and improving ergonomic performance. The partnership was considered a success by both OSHA and the Koch companies involved and resulted in a reduction in incident rates and significant improvements in all focus areas of the partnership.

In total, Koch companies have nearly 100 sites that have earned STAR certification in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs. Georgia-Pacific was named a VPP Corporate Pilot company in 2004, the first corporation to achieve this designation. In addition, Koch Aviation and four of Flint Hills Resources' Texas fuels terminals were the first in their industries to achieve VPP STAR status. INVISTA’s Monterrey, Mexico, facility has received the Safe Company Recognition for outstanding achievements during the program audits from La Secretaria del Trabajo y Prevision Social. The recognition is the highest given by STPS, which is part of the voluntary Self-Management Program in Health and Safety at Work.

Our Products: Helping customers meet environmental goals

Koch Membrane Systems produces state-of-the-art reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration systems that – without use of chemicals such as chlorine, etc. – remove minerals and chemicals from industrial wastewater and help purify drinking water for global communities. The company was named Water Technology Company of the Year by the International Desalination Association for its ongoing commitment to innovation in the industry.

In 2010, INVISTA was the first company to obtain Environmentally Preferable Product certification for its STAINMASTER® and Antron® carpet fibers under a new, expanded standard by Scientific Certification Systems. Antron® carpet fiber has been certified as an EPP multiple times since 2002.

Community Commitment

Koch companies are committed to understanding the needs of the community and participating in projects and activities that add value to their neighbors. Those projects include participation in educational, environmental stewardship and human services projects and organizations.

Koch companies work to preserve and maintain wildlife habitat on their properties, with 10 sites receiving Wildlife Habitat Council certification. Several of these are certified as Corporate Lands for Learning™ sites by WHC. The CLL certification recognizes a commitment to environmental education programs. In 2009, Flint Hills Resources’ sites in Minnesota and Illinois and an INVISTA site in South Carolina were finalists for Wildlife Habitat Council awards for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation and education.

Koch companies have worked with The Nature Conservancy on projects aimed at preserving land and habitat. In 2010, Georgia-Pacific donated 682 acres near Wauna, Ore., to The Nature Conservancy. Koch companies provide support to the Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation, which made a $1 million grant to The Nature Conservancy in Kansas to help with its acquisition of the nearly 11,000-acre Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Chase County, Kan.

Flint Hills Resources has donated $65,000 to Ducks Unlimited to help protect and restore habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife in Minnesota. In 2009, the organization honored Flint Hills Resources with its Diamond Heritage Sponsor award for supporting its Living Lakes Initiative

Each year, Koch companies sponsor and employees donate time to local habitat restoration and preservation, and cleanup efforts across the U.S.

Flint Hills Resources has been working with Friends of the Mississippi River, Great River Greening and several civic agencies to restore the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area to its natural state. Volunteers work to eliminate invasive plants from overtaking the area's natural landscape and to reclaim important habitat for the Mississippi River migratory bird flyway - host to 40 percent of North American waterfowl and millions of migratory songbirds. The project has been recognized with the Minnesota Environmental Initiative Award for Natural Resource Protection.

In recognition of this commitment to environmental stewardship, Keep America Beautiful honored Koch with the 2005 Vision for America Award – its most prestigious commendation for environmental stewardship and corporate citizenship.
